A Brief History of Honda
Honda was founded by a Japanese man named Soichiro Honda in 1948. Japan was still in ruins after WWII, and most of the factories in Japan were destroyed.
In war-torn Japan, Honda saw the need for a cheap and simple vehicle to get people around, and so they decided to place an engine on a bicycle. This economical vehicle was very popular in Japan, and Honda sold large quantities of them. By 1959, Honda was the world’s leading manufacturer of motorcycles.
Honda cars were slower to catch on than its motorcycles, but that changed when Honda designed the first Civic, which was aimed at launching Honda into the U.S. automobile market. The Civic proved to be a success, and was very popular with Americans. In the 1970’s, Honda unveiled the Accord, which was even more successful than the Civic in the American market, and allowed Honda to open up a factory in the United States in 1982, the first Japanese automaker to do so.
Honda has continued to strive forward, focusing on making quality, affordable vehicles. They are now the 5th largest auto manufacturer in the world, and they are the largest engine producer in the world with 14 million engines built every year.
